Taxidermy Tips - Caring for Game in the Field

3D ANIMATION :

If you take down a trophy animal in the field, you will likely want something to remember the opportunity by. Many hunters take the animal to a taxidermist to have it mounted. However, if you want to do this, you will need to begin preparations in the field to ensure that the specimen is in good health by the time the taxidermist gets it in his hands.

If at all possible, you should try to take it to the taxidermist as soon as you have it loaded in your truck. This will make the process much easier on him. However, if this isn't possible, then you will need to prepare the hide or cape yourself.

Before you even go out in the field though, you will need to begin your crusade for an suitable taxidermist to use. You won't have much time when you get back in order to show the way a permissible search. Also, some taxidermists are very single with the specimens they work with, so you will want to find out if he has any specific instructions for you as far as the specimen goes.

Hopefully, you will have pretty good aim since bullets can cause a lot of damage to a potentially amazing trophy. It should go without saying that you should never shoot the animal in the face if you want to reserve it. It's best to use a shoulder shot since doing so will cause less damage to the cape.

After the animal has been downed, try not to move it too much. The more you move it, the more inherent damage you can cause. Never drag it out of the woods whether since sticks and stones will cause damage to the hair. It is best that you bring along a sled so that you can pull the animal out of the woods after you have concluded with your preparations.

Before you even make your first cut, you need to resolve what type of mount you want. The type of mount you want will resolve the type of cut to make. After manufacture this decision, you will need to remove the hide. After it has been removed, go on to remove the meat, connective tissue, and fat too. Hopefully, you'll have a fleshing knife at your disposal to make this easier.

As mentioned, it is best that you take the specimen to your chosen taxidermist as soon as you maybe can. If you can't make it for a few days, then you will need to freeze it. However, don't leave it in the freezer too long or you may have to deal with freezer burn.

If using a freezer isn't even an option, then you will need to use salt instead. There should be a thick layer of salt applied to the entire hide. This will draw the moisture out and help reserve it. You'll need to remove the first layer after a duration of 24 hours when it gets too clumpy.

These are a few tips for caring for your game in the field. Pick out a taxidermist before you make the trip so you can get the hide back to him as soon as you come back. This will make both of your lives much easier.
